Fun and safe ways to stay in touch
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on people’s mental health. In a time when it is difficult to be close to your friends and family, it is still important to stay connected with your loved ones. This post will provide some safe ways to stay connected- whether it be online or at a distance.
1. Play an online game
Online games are a fun way to relax and have fun in a safe group setting. This can also be a way to make new friends or become closer with people who you don’t know well. Some games can be played over video calls (like Zoom), while some can be played without any face-to-face connection. Some popular online games include scribblio, Chess, and codenames. If you are bored of these games, try making your own version of Kahoot or Jeopardy for your group to play together!
2. Exercise with a friend
Exercise has been shown to improve mental health while keeping your body healthy. Staying active with a friend is a great way to connect and see someone frequently. This can happen over Zoom or socially distanced in a well-ventilated outdoor space. To find exercises to try, see some Youtube videos below.
3. Check up on your neighbours from a distance
Visiting your neighbours from a safe distance can be a great way to stay connected in your neighbourhood. You can ask your neighbour whether they need food or supplies, especially if they are older, live alone, or are immunocompromised. Even saying hi can improve you and your neighbour’s day!
4. Cook or bake with a friend
Cooking and baking are fun activities to do with a friend over video call. You can both make the same recipe or try out something new. This provides a great way to catch up while keeping busy. At the end of the call, you will have also learned some new skills in the kitchen!
5. Stream movies together
Apps like ‘Netflix party’ provide a way for people to watch movies on different screens at the same time. This way, you and your friends can stay safe at home while having a fun movie night. To make it more fun, try making your favourite movie snacks at home!
