Getting enough sleep is important for your general well-being. However, sleep disturbances are common among those who have anxiety or depression – 90% of depressed patients report having sleep problems. Not only is insomnia are a major symptom for those with depression, but it also appears to be a risk factor for developing depression. For example, those with depression are more likely to report difficulty falling asleep and awakening during the night.
Suggestions:
- Try to get enough sleep (between 7 to 9 hours a night) and going to sleep/waking up at a regular time
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and big meals closer to bedtime.
- Make sure your sleeping environment is dark, comfortable, and quiet.
